i've written before about some of my favorite places in portland, but today i thought i would write about a few other much-loved places a bit further afield in maine. i got to visit them in my travels this weekend and was happy as ever to be back.
in wiscasset, about 1 1/4 hours up the coast from portland, i visited rock paper scissors and smitten - both are owned by erica soule and are completely lovely and full of treasures. erica has a great eye and every time i've visited she's been super friendly to talk with, too.
smitten is a home and housewares shop full of mid-century modern inspired designs and some vintage items, all arranged by color. every time i visit smitten i wonder if anyone would notice if i just quietly moved in, because it is so exactly my taste in there that it's pretty spooky. interesting artwork, jewelry, glassware and dishes, rugs, sheets, pillows, galbraith and paul lamps and other fun things make for a really beautiful visual display.

next door, rock paper scissors is primarily a stationary store, but is also chock
full of interesting crafty how-to books, kid toys, pretty desk
accesories and other bits of goodness in addition to a lovely selection
of cards, pens, papers, tapes, ribbons and ephemera. the first time i
walked into this store several years ago i was completely overwhelmed
(i know, that sounds so dramatic! but it's true.) by the beautiful and
thoughtful displays, also all organized by color.
i hope you get a chance to visit these great shops sometime and that you enjoy them as much as i have. thank you, erica, for chatting with me and letting me snap some photos.
