we had a terrific time in new york last week. first off, the weather was great. the kids were a little bit grouchy with me because i didn't have the foresight to pack shorts, but they lived.
i really liked seeing susy pilgrim waters' mural in the new childrens room at the public library. it's gorgeous.
we went to the moma and i was especially taken with the tangled alphabets exhibition. i loved both artists' work so much! ((it is really worth taking the time to go through what's online, and to enlarge the images when you can so you can see the detail.)) i loved it. i got my kids the moma kids walking tour recorders - they A) pretended they were cellphones and B) spent the entire time plugging in bad numbers so they could here the vaguely british voice say 'sorry, that is not a valid selection.' over and over. it bought us a few hours, though.
while we were in brooklyn with our friends, i had a moment when i realized i must have total amnesia about raising my kids through toddlerhood. our friends have a 4 1/2 year or and a 2 1/2 year old, and every morning and every afternoon they walk to and from school, which is a good number of blocks away. mr. 4 1/2 rides a tiny two wheeler bike (he's really good on it, too,) and ms. 2 1/2 travels on her scooter. at very different speeds. in the city. with one mother trying to bridge the gap between them. by the time we'd walked them to school that morning i couldn't decide whether to give her some sort of medal for courage and valor, or some jack daniels and valium. she's taught them really great rules about stopping at the end of each block and waiting carefully, but still. i could never have done that.
on saturday we headed to tarrytown for my little opening at eyebuzz. it is hard not to be a little bit nervous when you are going to a gallery you've never been to that happens to have all of your work on its walls, but it turned out to be a great night in every way. the weather was lovely, tarrytown was hopping and fun, all of the people who came to the opening were interesting and fun to talk to, and the gallery itself looked amazing and welcoming. i had pretty much guessed from my prior emails with tim and tara (and tara's blog) that i'd really like them, and i was right. they were terrific.
other fun things we did/saw:
refinery (i love this shop. i got my first pair of saltwaters, and they really are as nice and comfy as everyone says)
smith and vine
salvor kiosk
listened to both matilda and the witches on audiobook during the car ride
saw + played with cousins in connecticut
it is really nice to be back in maine, too. spring is officially here.
